A story in silico: No. 16 (revised version): The Red Pavilion by Wilf Tilley, Algorithmic Modeling, 120cm x 80cm x 2cm

  • 120 cm x 80 cm x 2 cm

A monochrome, cathedral-like interior frames a slender draped figure standing on a platform, one hand to the face and the other folded across the body. Below the ledge, a translucent violet sphere containing the image of the lacquer gate to Paradise Island (see below) glows above rippling dark water, its mirrored surface reflecting the color. Soft haze, arched recesses, and stark vertical lines sharpen the digital, sculptural composition. (Artist Catalogue Note: The Red Pavilion was originally modeled with another work, Autumn Moon, as a diptych using planar images side by side. The revised version of the Red Pavilion re-imagines it in three dimensions, albeit within a flat, onscreen image. Both panels are entitled after the Chinese detective story by Robert van Gulik (Scribner's Sons, 1968). Autumn Moon is the name of the courtesan of Paradise Island who features in the story. Both works are designed for printing on glass panels and other substrates.
